Expansion of Government What is Necessary - 1816 Words
Is there a limit to how much control the government can have over citizens? When the United States was founded, it was constructed to ââ¬Å"restrain men from injuring one another, and otherwise leaving them free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread they earned,â⬠but as time passes they have began to become more involved in issues that do not serve the well being of the people. Today, problems economically and socially flood the nation leaving the government in disarray. Before one can determine the limits of government, one must define the role the government has and what it is responsible for. Friedrich Hayek defined a government to be responsible to offer a minimalâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Many may be wondering why the government would want to get involved in issues that were never meant to be one of its responsibilities. The answer is simple considering the system in which power is obtained in the United States. Politicians are granted power by winning elections which are determined by receiving a majority of the peopleââ¬â¢s votes. The process in which people have been made a part of the government actions through voting is clearly necessary in any form of a democracy. Problems occur when people vote others into power for reasons other than the ability that politician has to be successful in managing the country. Media has made politicians less known for what they can do to help our countries needs at the moment, and more about the polit iciansââ¬â¢ stance on controversial topics that involve individualsââ¬â¢ religious beliefs or suit oneââ¬â¢s lifestyle. What guidelines should the government be following to insure they are involved in only necessary conflicts? First, they must question whether there is a source of market failure. If there is, they must ask if there is evidence that the market actually would fail. They must then question whether the government can realistically make an impact that would result in a solution to the problem. Finally, they must ask if there is evidence that the benefit from the action that was taken outweighs the costs. The Perils Of Ignorance Toward The Aging Process - 1781 Words
The Perils of Ignorance Toward the Aging Process From the very moment that you are born, you begin the process of aging and it is irrevocably unavoidable. As Denham Harman put it within his article The Aging Process, ââ¬Å"Aging is the progressing accumulation of changes with time that are associated with or responsible for the ever increasing susceptibility to disease and death which accompanies advancing ageâ⬠(1). Harman highlights what is often referred to as the two different paths of aging. The most minimalistic approach to categorizing our geriatric population is to divide them either into those ââ¬Å"typically agingâ⬠and those ââ¬Å"atypically agingâ⬠,. There are a multitude of factors that must be assessed in order to determine what is occurringâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The amount of money we are spending on healthcare is currently on the rise as a direct result of this increased number of geriatric individuals. The cost of dealing with aging alone is extensive, not to mention that the rise in chronic health conditions with our aging population. A chronic health condition, specifically a degenerative health condition is double the cost of living than typical aging (Gupta). We are facing challenges we never anticipated facing in the past, and as a result of that, we are left with a lot of heavy burdens that we cannot face without making serious social changes. The founder of the Alzheimerââ¬â¢s Association, Harry Johns, highlights the ways in which how through the normal aging process our bodies and minds decline, but our intelligence remains intact. ââ¬Å"We are less physically and mentally flexible and we take more time to process information. Memory changes occur as well, and itââ¬â¢s common to have greater difficulty remembering the names of people, places and other things as we age.â⬠(Johns 1). Johns specifically describes the biggest reason why ignorance is so detrimental to our aging population. Individuals assume that a natural decline in health is typical as we age. However, the changes that our typically aging population are facing should be small changes, hardly noticeable to most. Love In Todays Society Essay - 1360 Words
Love In Todays Society A key to understanding Sociology and the Social Sciences in general is to evaluate subjects through time and compare and contrast characteristics that have changed and those that have remained the same. For this assignment I have elected to access three sources dealing with love; in three distinct time periods in the modern era. First we will survey one of the first popular mediums for the expression of love; that of poetry. I have chosen a poem by W.H. Auden to represent the early portion of this century- specifically the 1930s and 1940s. I knew I had to include a song from my idol Jim Morrison. Not only is he the perfect voice of the volatile sex revolution of the 1960s and 1970s; his work capturesâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Love was quite important to Morrison- provided that he had it often and with different partners. One woman could never contain his sexual urges. In this reality many sociological concepts are found. Morrison cohabited with numerous women, mainly his life-long steady girlfriend Pamela. Morrisons male domineering attitude is evident in his line quot;Wanna be her daddy.quot; While women were beginning to experience more equality during this period, males were still seen as dominant. He does show signs of compassion with his line: ââ¬Å"Dont ya love her as shes walking out the door. Like she did one thousand times before.â⬠This shows that he was not as worried about ââ¬Å" being a manâ⬠as some may have thought. He lost his love once again and he is not afraid to admit it. Even so, Morrisons primary style of love was definitely ââ¬Å"ludus.â⬠He had no reservations about playing the field. Pre- marital sex was easily brushed aside by Morrison in this era when society was more accepting of ââ¬Å"free love.â⬠Our Mens Health article is best understood by using the two genders sexual scripts- or blueprints of our sexuality, to sort out societys expected roles. ââ¬Å"50 Ways To Peeve Your Loverâ⬠does a decent job of informing men of the mistakes that women recognize in their sexual demeanor. Speech Japans invasion in China
Question: You are a colonel in the Japanese army in July 1914.Justify Japan's military presence in China and Indo-China in response to American sanctions. Answer: We often hear that Japans invasion in China is just the desire to increase its imperial power. But, we have major economic and militaristic elements to invade China. Our country required more resources and space, as we lacked proper resources and space on our homeland. . For growing up as an economic and military power, it was important to show everyone that Japan has abilities to achieve what it wants. For the reason of industrial growth our invasion in Taiwan, Korea and in Manchuria was important. Japan had an opportunity to prove its leadership capabilities to the world. Japan needed land, oil and imperialism, for which invasion of China was very important. People from our country were highly discriminated and it was proved by the Immigration Act of 1924. United States excluded us from the immigration act. The immigration system was based on the quota system but exclusion of the Asians was a great discrimination. This was the most insulting treatment for us. This also declared the position of Asians in American society as we were prejudiced and discriminated. We had to prove to the world that we are not weak. Under the Kellogg-Briand Pact,1928, United Nation had banned the sale of oil, iron and steel to Japan. This act renounced war as major instrument policy. Lynton Committee 1931 gave importance to the proposals and complaints of our country towards China and also blamed Japan for disturbing the territorial integrity of China. Our delegation had to walk out from the league. Japan was left in the control of Manchuria, which was an insult for us. Japan was a considered as a nation, with no power and possibilities. It was important to show our imperialistic power to the world. Our officers were the hard line military officers, who had the ideology of increasing the power and resources. We had to prove our strength and we could conquer other countries. China was the country, which was considered as the powerful nation of East Asia, and conquering China was enough to prove to our strength. In the first two decades of the 20th century, there was immense tension between Japan and United Nations. U.S. had very negative treatment with the Japanese immigrants, as Japanese were considered to be inferior. The racial inequality was very grave. United Nation and Japan had many commercial and economic competitions, as there were many opportunities in China. With the Treaty of Versailles, the problems between the two nations settled down a little. Japan did not want to heighten the tension as we had many economical interests in China. Washington Naval Talks 1921-22, was another turn for Japan. We did not want war and agreed to reduce the naval power in China. Through this conference we acquired naval bases in the Pacific, which was the sign of our increasing power. This was done in order to have easy trade, though the agreement of small navy was not very well taken in our country, but the agreement was for the peace and betterment of our country. Neutrality Act 1935 banned the sale of arms and ammunitions from United States and the cash and carry for us was beneficial. This act increased the power of Japan. However, with Lend Lease 1941, the power was given in the hands of United States and we were forced to surrender, which further diminished our power. Hence, Japan was highly discriminated on the different levels. This situation forced us to have war and prove our power. Difference Between AP English Synthesis Essay Samples and AP English Essay
Difference Between AP English Synthesis Essay Samples and AP English EssayIs there a difference between English AP Synthesis Essay samples and AP English Essay samples? There is no such distinction, but there are some important differences between them. It's important to know that the essays that AP English teachers write are very different from those that are AP English Synthesis, even though there are plenty of similarities between the two.In each version of the AP English tests, one or more groups of students will work individually on a composition with an assigned topic. The individual groups will then present their work to a panel of teachers. The response groups will then have a chance to respond to the panel, but the group with the highest scoring final exam is selected as the 'final' assessment of their performance. While the academic language and structure of the AP English essay are generally the same for each question, the composition will have a completely different struct ure for the AP English Synthesis version. This can mean a great deal of information about the topic is presented in different ways. A clear distinction must be made between the two versions of the AP English essay. One of the biggest differences between the two types of essay is the presentation styles. The AP English Synthesis tests are structured in such a way that students do not write in a colloquial style. Instead, the type of composition that is written is designed to be understood by the average reader. This means that, while it can be less formal, students still need to choose their words carefully and use proper English grammar throughout the composition. In addition to this, there are three factors that affect how the AP English teacher will select their response group in the AP English Synthesis tests. First, the group's gender, composition grade, and AP English School District (ASED) eligibility is taken into consideration. Students who are unable to write the composition with enough quality to pass the test will be assigned a group that is less likely to be qualified to write a good response.Second, the age of the students involved in the test are also taken into consideration when selecting the response group. Students who are more than 12 years old will most likely be assigned to a lower grade group than those who are younger. Finally, students who are ESL students will receive a lower grade overall than their non-ESL counterparts. While there are some differences between the AP English Synthesis samples, the methods are actually very similar. Both versions of the composition will contain essays that are in close chronological order. While the syllabus will follow a different format for each, the basic structure is the same. Both have a narrative section at the beginning, followed by discussion questions and results sections at the end.As you can see, the structure of the AP English tests is largely the same as the structure of the AP English Synth esis tests. As such, the intent of the course and the number of units you need to take will be the same as well. For this reason, it is important to check the syllabus closely to ensure that you can meet the maximum number of units that are needed for the course you are taking.

7 Poor Parking Signs
7 Poor Parking Signs 7 Poor Parking Signs 7 Poor Parking Signs By Mark Nichol Iââ¬â¢m inured to ineptly expressed messages on parking signs, but the signage reproduced here prompts a ticketing spree by the spelling police. What, exactly, is a low-emmiting, fuel-efficent vehicle can it park there if itââ¬â¢s magn-efficent? and how do you know whether you have one? This sign should read ââ¬Å"Low-Emitting, Fuel-Efficient Vehicle Parking Only.â⬠Sign makers in the United Kingdom are so polite! They ever so regretful that they must inconvenience you by informing you that this parking area is unsuitable for HGVââ¬â¢s. (In other words ââ¬â to translate for Americans donââ¬â¢t park your semi here, bub.) Thatââ¬â¢s a charming sign, but an apostrophe and an s signals possession; an s alone indicates a plural, and thatââ¬â¢s what ââ¬Å"HGVsâ⬠is. Therefore, the message invites the question, ââ¬Å"Unsuitable for HGVââ¬â¢s what? And who is HGV?â⬠Thatââ¬â¢s comforting to know that none customers I guess that means ââ¬Å"no customersâ⬠will be towed away. (Sometimes, after I dine at a Mexican restaurant, I feel like I need to be towed away or, better yet, hoisted onto a flatbed truck.) Oh, I get it now: noncustomers. What really clinches this failure of a sign is the gratuitous period after away, and the resulting fragment that follows. Whatââ¬â¢s a privae, and how does one park it (or them, as the Latin plural appendage -ae seems to indicate)? How kind of the sign maker, by the way, to refrain from taking up all that space on the weekends with a fleet of privas. Here, two possessive nouns are rendered erroneously in different ways: They should read Golfersââ¬â¢ and Raftersââ¬â¢ (unless, of course, the sign is targeting a single rafter). Customerââ¬â¢s only what? We expect better of a progressive international grocery store chain. (And ââ¬Å"1 hour parkingâ⬠? I know that commercial advertising is inimical to hyphenation that is perhaps the most ubiquitous signage error but, really, does Whole Foods Market have to be as careless as every other merchant?) You had to see this one coming: otherwise known as privates parking. (Entrance on Whitley, printing by Witless.)
